The prospect of getting braces can be daunting enough, but there are plenty of horror stories to make the thought of braces even worse!
Don’t put off getting braces because you think you may set off the metal detectors at airports, or if you’re worried that kissing will make your braces stick together. These are both myths and are completely FALSE!
So, let’s look at debunking some of the other top 10 myths around getting braces.
1. BRACES ARE PAINFUL
Braces are not painful. They can cause some discomfort in the first few days after being installed, or after being tightened. This dullness usually disappears in a matter of hours or days.
2. BRACES ARE ONLY FOR KIDS
Myth! Teeth can be straightened at any age and more adults than ever are looking to teeth straightening solutions, especially with the development of several invisible or ceramic options.
3. BRACES ARE SO NOTICEABLE!
The traditional wire and bracket braces can be noticeable on the top teeth, however over the past 20 years, many modern orthodontic treatments are barely noticeable or completely invisible, including Invisalign* clear aligners and lingual braces (braces on the inside of teeth)
4. RETAINERS AFTER BRACES ARE UNNECESSARY
False! Even after your treatment is complete, your teeth have the potential to move back into their original position. To stop this from happening, you will need to wear your retainers for a week after removal. Following this you can reduce the amount of time from most nights of the week to just some nights.
5. BRACES ARE EXPENSIVE
Depending on your circumstance and the significance you place on health and beauty braces may seem expensive, or very inexpensive. Fine Orthodontics can offer flexible payment plans to ensure that your treatment cost doesn’t fall outside of your budget.
6. I DON’T NEED TO VISIT MY DENTIST DURING TREATMENT
You should maintain your regular visits to your dentist, especially during treatment. Your dentist will be able to clean those hard to reach places and keep an eye on overall dental hygiene.
7. BRACES CAUSE TEETH STAINING
Braces won’t cause teeth staining as long as you are diligent in your brushing, flossing and overall dental health.
8. BRACES REQUIRE SOME TEETH TO BE REMOVED
Not necessarily. Orthodontic treatment has come a long way, and there are ways around removing teeth. Especially if your orthodontist has devised a plan for you from your very first visit at around age 7.
9. BRACES TAKE TOO LONG TO MOVE TEETH
Again, not necessarily. Depending on your individual biology, method of treatment, compliance and the extent to which your teeth need to be corrected are all factors that will influence your treatment time. Some cases may only need 6 months, while others can take up to 3 years. Your orthodontist will advise the best type of treatment for you.
10. I WON’T BE ABLE TO PLAY SPORT OR MUSIC WITH BRACES
False! It may take a little time to get used to playing your instrument with braces, but you’ll certainly adapt. And a strong mouth guard will protect your teeth and braces during any sports, so there’s no need to give up either hobby.
Braces need not impede on your lifestyle. Make an appointment with your orthodontist to discuss the best course of treatment for your needs.
