EMERGENCY ORTHODONTICS

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

THERE ARE SOME SITUATIONS THAT ARE CLASSED AS ORTHODONTIC EMERGENCIES. IN MOST INSTANCES, THERE ARE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE AT HOME TO EASE ANY DISCOMFORT UNTIL YOU CAN MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT.

Broken or Bent Wires Sticking into Your Cheek or Gum

Sometimes, a wire might stick out behind your molar bands as the teeth start move. If this happens, place some wax on the exposed wire for relief and book an appointment so we can trim the wire.

Loose Brackets

If your brackets come loose, call the practice as soon as possible. We will arrange an appointment for you to have them re-bonded.

If more than one bracket is loose, please advise our receptionist so we can ensure the appointment window will accommodate your procedure.

LOOSE

MOLAR BANDS

If a molar band comes loose, you can lose control of the tooth, and risk food getting lodged around it. The band must be re-cemented.

Unless you have already booked an appointment with us, call the office to let the receptionist know you may need an appointment sooner.

ACHY OR

SORE TEETH

Achy or sore teeth are normal during any orthodontic treatment. It’s usually the result of the forces moving your teeth.

Many patients do experience soreness for a few days after braces are fitted, and sometimes just after a regular adjustment.

Try to eat soft foods during this time and, if needed, use a mild painkiller that you would take for headaches. Please contact our office if you experience persistent or severe pain.

LOST

SEPARATOR

Separators are used to nudge your teeth apart, so bands will fit. Should the space open too quickly, the separator may fall out. Unless you have an appointment booked within the next 2-3 days, you will need to request an interim appointment to have the separator replaced.

If your separator is lodged under the gum and you cannot extract it, book an appointment for one of the expert team at Fine Orthodontics to remove it.
