WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?
If you have not needed to visit an orthodontist before, you may be wondering how they differ from a regular dentist.
While both dentists and orthodontists are concerned with improving a patient's oral health, they have very different roles; Dentistry is a broader medical speciality concerned with overall oral health. Orthodontists on the other hand, are qualified dentists who have undergone further study to specialise in preventing, diagnosing and treating misaligned teeth. Orthodontists concentrate on the alignment of teeth and jaw to help correct any issues with bites, occlusion, and the straightness of teeth.
Anyone can visit an orthodontist. Your family dentist may refer you, or you may want to book your own consultation to discuss your needs and concerns.
If you have misalignment or bite concerns, your orthodontist will advise the most suitable treatment options for you. You may need to wear braces or another type of orthodontic appliance to help move your teeth into the correct position, and ensure they stay there for a lifetime.
