How Long do Clear Braces Take?

Updated: May 19, 2023

Clear braces are an update on one of the more conventional teeth straightening treatments. The orthodontic appliance is created with clear brackets, rather than the more noticeable metal variety.

The fundamental difference between clear braces and traditional braces lies in the fact that the bracket is created with a clear plastic compound rather than metal. This means that clear braces are far less noticeable than the rather shiny silver metal variety.

Clear braces tend to be a little larger in size than standard metal brackets. This means they can be more difficult to clean, resulting in hygiene issues and even calcium damage if not cared for correctly. While clear brackets are not easily stained by drinks, food, or smoking, the clear elastic ties that hold the arch wire to the brackets can stain. Stained ties must be replaced at your scheduled appointments, as they cannot be cleaned.

While clear braces are certainly tough, they are made from a different material and unlike traditional metal braces, the material can crack or chip. So, if you play contact sports where your mouth and jaw are likely to be hit, you may want to consider traditional braces, Invisalign* or a mouth guard.

Damage and breakages add to the length of treatment time when wearing any orthodontic treatment, so it's best to have the treatment that will best suit your lifestyle.

Orthodontic treatment with clear braces can take longer than teeth straightening treatment with traditional metal braces. Treatment can range from 1 to 2 years. If you are happy to invest a little more time in your beautiful smile, this could be the option for you.

As with any orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist is the best person to help you determine the right treatment for your case. Keep in mind that adjustments with clear braces are sometimes smaller, which can add to the overall treatment time.
